46% of the referrals to us in 21-22 (up 30% from 20-21) were related to mental health concerns. Including anxiety, depression, low mood, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and disordered eating), many of a complex nature with implications on staffing, qualifications and support. This doesn’t include the Acute Childhood Experience referrals (ACEs), which accounted for an additional 6%, and we have a waiting list that our Targeted Support Service could also help if we had the additional resources.
Our Targeted Support Service provides 1-2-1 sessions for young person plus advocacy in all Child in Need meetings ( e.g EHAT, CP). The sessions last for as long as the young person needs them, and take place whenever the young person feels comfortable, in our centre, at school or home, or even whilst out in the park or climbing wall. We give them someone to talk to, places to go and things to do to support their mental health. We want to ensure we support young people as soon as they need us.
