Situation
Poland has some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe, criminalised in almost all cases. While technically legal in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the life of the mother, doctors routinely deny these cases and it is almost totally inaccessible. In cases of serious foetal indication, couples face the stress of travelling alongside the trauma of grieving a much-wanted but unviable pregnancy. Every day, 4 women leave Poland for an abortion overseas, and 90 access safe abortion with pills.
Solution
Abortion Without Borders works in partnership across Europe to connect Polish people with information and support to access abortions. A 7-day-a-week Polish helpline provides information, fielding 630 calls a month on average, and referring people to AWB partners outside of Poland if they need to travel for an abortion. We provide logistical support including arranging travel, accommodation and translation, and we cover the costs for people who need it.
