We support the social enterprise Lily's Leaves in Nepal. This provides training and employment to vulnerable women, including a group of deaf women whom we have trained as silver jewellers. We cover initial operating costs until Lily's Leaves can be self-sustaining through sale of products.

Situation
Employment is scarce in Nepal and there are few opportunities for vulnerable women, especially if they are disabled. We support deaf women who work alongside able-bodied women at Lily's Leaves. Deaf people in Nepal are highly stigmatised, nicknamed "lato" which means "stupid". The isolation that they experience because of the nature of their disability is compounded by such social attitudes. In desperation, able-bodied women may seek work abroad and this can put them at risk of traffickers.
Solution
We aim to empower vulnerable and disabled women through training and employment. This has to become self-sustaining through sale of products domestically and internationally. To this end, we helped found Lily's Leaves as a social enterprise in October 2020. Business growth has been good, in spite of COVID, but we need funds in 2023 to sustain operations and to fund the manufacture of products (e.g. disposable sanitary pads and school rucksacks) that we use in charity programmes that help girls.
