Oxfordshire Breastfeeding Support aims to increase breastfeeding, provision of breastmilk and responsive feeding for babies in Oxfordshire. We support families to feed their babies in an environment that is welcoming, non judgmental and free for all. We provide both face to face and online support.

    Situation

The UK has among the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world at 12 months. In Oxfordshire, 81% of women initiate breastfeeding, but a quarter stop in the first two months. We know that failure to breastfeed, when mothers have the desire to do so, increases the risk of postnatal depression. We also know that telling women that they should breastfeed without providing adequate support is bad for their mental health. This problem severely impacts mothers during the vulnerable perinatal period.

    Solution

We provide specialist antenatal and breastfeeding support, online and in-person, in ways that are flexible and tailored to individual women's needs. Helped by our volunteers, our sessions are warm and welcoming: we empower women to achieve their feeding goals, normalising breastfeedng and newborn behaviour. The result is increased confidence around breastfeeding, which grows breastfeeding rates for future generations, improves the mental health of women, and reduces social isolation.
