Children 1st is transforming children and young people's experience of the Scottish justice system through our ground-breaking, Government-supported Bairns Hoose project, which will ensure child victims and witnesses of crime receive the care, support and justice they need to recover and thrive.

At the moment, if a crime affecting a child is reported in Scotland, the child must speak to many different people, including police, social workers, doctors and nurses. They have to relive their experience up to 14 times, often alone and without the support of their loved ones. This can be hugely distressing, intimidating and disempowering, and children rarely receive the timely support they need to recover. This can make the process of seeking justice more traumatic than the initial crime.

Scotland's first Bairns Hoose will be a safe, child-friendly, welcoming place for children to go to once a crime has been reported. Children will be able to give evidence, receive medical care, take part in decisions about their care and get the support they need to recover from their experiences all under one warm and welcoming roof, and with their loved ones by their side. Bairns Hoose will bring together justice, health, social work and recovery support to best meet the needs of the child.
