GBSS is seeking to raise funds to expand our information and support for women wanting to understand what group B Strep (GBS) is and does, and save baby's lives. Each month 66 babies are diagnosed with this life-threatening infection and, sadly, four babies die from this usually preventable illness.

Situation
Group B Strep (GBS) is a bacterium carried by up to 40% of adults with no symptoms. Babies are particularly vulnerable; it is the most common cause of serious infection, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis in newborns. On average, four babies die and six are left with long-term disabilities every month in the UK. Yet these infections are usually preventable with the right support but often go undiagnosed in mothers and babies due to a lack of awareness and action. This puts lives at risk.
Solution
GBSS is the UK's leading source of information and support on GBS. Our Helpline saves lives by supporting women to fully understand how to keep themselves and their babies safe. We provide outreach support to women affected by GBS from diverse backgrounds. We provide support via telephone, email and online, raising awareness among new/expectant women. We encourage women to get informed about GBS and consider inexpensive antenatal testing and antibiotics in labour for those who carry GBS. -
