The impact of unresolved trauma on women’s offending, substance use and their long-term health and life expectancy. Many women involved with the justice system have had adverse childhood experiences, including abuse and neglect, family breakdown due to parental imprisonment and violence in the home, either as a witness or a victim.

One Small Thing is providing a safe, residential community (Hope Street) for women who have experienced trauma, and as a result have found themselves involved with the justice system. Hope Street will prevent women being unnecessarily sentenced to prison because there is no other option available. Women will be provided with a uniquely tailored programme of support that will help them rebuild their lives and allow children to remain in their care rather than go into the care system.
