At present, access to classics relies on wealth or luck: classical subjects are taught in only 25% of state schools, compared to 75% of independent schools. As a result, state-educated pupils are too often denied the opportunity to study classics – a rich and varied subject that improves literacy, encourages cultural insight, and drives social mobility. Classics for All exists to address this inequality, so that all pupils, regardless of background or ability, can engage with the ancient world.

Classics for All aims to level the playing field by offering flexible, comprehensive support to state schools interested in teaching classics. We train teachers, many with no background in classics, to introduce or develop classics on the curriculum. We also offer ongoing support, advice, and professional development through our 14 regional networks to ensure sustainability. Over 40% of the schools we support are in areas of disadvantage and we are increasingly targeting our work in these areas.
