Graduate musicians arrive at Southbank Sinfonia with good individual technique and great appetite to further their orchestral expertise but with limited experience of playing in an ensemble. We know that orchestras require musicians who not only play well but are versatile, engaging, and have the physical and mental stamina to cope with a highly intensive schedule. Nonetheless, at conservatoire, there is relatively little time to explore ensemble culture and orchestral repertoire.

Southbank Sinfonia’s annual Fellowship is unique in Europe in being full time and unaligned to any one major orchestra, allowing SbS to undertake many valuable artistic partnerships, an experience not available elsewhere. Described by The Times as “the future of classical music,” the programme bridges a gap between music colleges and the profession, creating players with the stamina, confidence and versatility to work in any genre, across art forms and in education and the community.
