Situation
In London, many homelessness charities compete for contracts and donations which confuses the public undermines collaboration and distorts strategic thinking. This can lead to gaps in provision. Until the LHC highlighted the need for a focus on women there was little recognition that domestic abuse and sexual exploitation are behind female homelessness. We believe Londoners should find it easy to help end homelessness and that collaboration improves services.
Solution
We represent every Borough of London and our public facing appeals with the Mayor and the Evening Standard raised well over £1million for the sector. They funded the Women’s Development Unit and a 24 hr drop-in for women escaping domestic abuse. This year the first London Walk demonstrated – through feedback from participants – that supporters want charities to collaborate proactively. We are now seeking to systematize gifts-in-kind collation and distribution whilst making the LHC sustainable.
