For many, Christmas is a wonderful time of year but for people living with an abusive partner, it is a dangerous time. Their dogs can be a barrier to them leaving as many refuges are unable to accept pets. Your help will get humans and dogs to safety and help them start a new life.

    Situation

Dogs Trust Freedom Project is a dog fostering service for people fleeing domestic abuse and going into refuge. The service has been running for 17 years and has helped more than 2,000 people to flee domestic abuse. Many refuges are not in a position to accept pets so in many cases people experiencing domestic abuse are unable to leave their home until they know there is somewhere safe for their dog.

    Solution

The Freedom Project provides free and confidential care for dogs, enabling their owners to access refuge without the fear of what may happen to their dog if left behind. Dogs within the Freedom Project are cared for in the loving home of a volunteer foster carer until their owners can be safely reunited with them. During this stay we cover the cost of everything for the volunteer and provide photos an updates for the owner until they are ready to have their dog returned.
