For millions of South African children, school meals are their main source of daily nutrition, yet many disadvantaged pre-schools can't afford to provide meals. Breadline Africa's pre-school feeding programme provides a daily fortified porridge, providing them with the nutrition they need to learn.

In 2019, it was reported that 25% of South African children under 5 were stunted for their age, due to not receiving the necessary nutrition for healthy growth and development. Hungry children can not pay attention and absorb information. By 2021, 50% more households reported that children went hungry 7 days prior to survey. Millions of children rely on school meals as their main source of daily nutrition, yet many schools and parents can't afford to provide it and do not receive public funding.

By providing these pre-schools with a fortified maize porridge, the teachers are able to give each child a warm breakfast and even lunch, ensuring that each child starts and ends their school days with the sustenance they need. It costs approximately £1 to feed one pre-school child breakfast for a month and £10 to feed one child for a full school year. Providing meals during school hours improves learners’ ability to concentrate, which in turn will improve their performance.
