Build our Hope Centre in Uganda where families from the slums can discover a hope for their future through adult skills training at our Tailoring Skills Project. We wish to create a dedicated Hope Centre, equipped with sewing machines, teaching facilities and an atmosphere of possibility.

    Situation

Families living in Kampala’s slums face overcrowding, insufficient shelter, food insecurity, poor sanitation and abject poverty. 85% of the population were employed in informal labour prior to the pandemic and with the onset of lockdowns their small incomes vanished overnight. More families have now been pushed into poverty with few stable income opportunities, just as the food prices in Uganda increased drastically. Providing access to vocational training will help these communities to recover economically and have hope for a future where they can support their families.

    Solution

We will build a Hope Centre in Naguru slum, providing free training courses in tailoring, knitting, carpentry and business skills to adults in the slums. A fully equipped centre will allow students in the area access to vocational training that is accredited by the Directorate of Industrial Training in Uganda. Graduates will be empowered with the skills and tools they need to gain a sustainable livelihood for their families and lift themselves out of poverty.
