We believe in giving everyone opportunities to experience live performance and creative expression. We run targeted projects in our building and out in the community, a busy training programme, and free, supported visits to the Theatre, for priority groups from across the Wakefield district.

Situation
Wakefield is an area of lower arts engagement and there are many perceived and real barriers to participation in performing arts activities and experiences; the Theatre is often seen as a place that is not for everyone. We are also in an area of high social deprivation, which has only got worse over the last few years. We have seen increased numbers of those identified as lonely or at risk of social isolation and have low aspirations recorded amongst our young people.
Solution
Our projects will ensure that more people across Wakefield are able to engage in creative and cultural activities. We will continue to work across a number of priority groups including learning disabled young people, socially isolated older people, young people, and asylum seekers and refugees. We will run projects out in the community and in our building, with the aim of creating a welcoming space for creative expression, where participants can make social connections and build confidence.
