Mental health issues affect 1 in 6 (16.7%) of 6-16 year olds, up from 1 in 9 in 2017. Research shows that adverse childhood experiences – such as deprivation, abuse, domestic violence – have an impact on the mental health of children and young people, and that inequality underlies many of these risk factors, with children from the poorest 20% of households four times more likely to experience serious mental health difficulties by the age of 11 than children from the wealthiest 20% of households
As a small, local, independent charity, WLAC is able to offer flexible, free, time-unlimited, solution-focused counselling and therapy services to children and young people who may not be able to access similar services elsewhere. Our experienced team of therapists work flexibly with the client and their family, focusing on strengths, to effect long term change, allowing children and young people to fulfil their potential. Last year we provided over 4400 therapy sessions to over 350 families.
