Our ambition is to see Gloucestershire’s wetlands full of life again. Our appeal is to support landscape-scale work with partners and landowners, to create a mosaic of wetlands supporting endangered fish, waders and plants, mitigating floodrisks for local communities, holding floodwater and carbon.

Situation
Wetlands have declined around the world by over 65% this century. As a result, in Gloucestershire, important habitats have been lost, disastrous flooding has increased in frequency and our land’s capacity to store water and carbon has been significantly reduced. Our vast wetlands and rivers once provided valuable habitat for diverse wildlife, sustained by the nutrient-rich waters. The impact on rare and key wildlife is severe but can still be reversed.
Solution
We have an ambitious landscape-scale approach, working with landowners, farmers and partners. Together we aim to create a mosaic of wetlands in the floodplains of the River Severn supporting endangered species. With funds raised, we will deliver projects aiming to improve the condition of wetlands in four key areas (see below) – delivering natural solutions with wide-ranging benefits. Permanent land-use change will support clean water, improving habitats and connectivity throughout the landscape
