It is estimated there are as many as 100,000 children living on the streets in Addis Ababa alone, with 80% being boys. Hope for Justice data for 2021 indicates that over 60% of these young boys are trafficked into sexual and labour exploitation, with 40% of these resorting to dangerous survival mechanisms such as theft, violence and drug abuse. In 2021, we identified 228 cases of trafficking across our four Lighthouses for boys in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Sodo and Hosanna.
In Ethiopia, Hope for Justice runs transitional centres, called Lighthouses, which provide protection and care for children aged under 18 living on the streets who have been trafficked or at risk of trafficking. Four of our Lighthouses specifically support boys and provide the following services: shelter, nutritious food, basic healthcare, resilience training, educational catch-up classes, psycho-social support, vocational training, and safe family/community reintegration.
