Imagine giving birth in a country where you don’t know the language, you are socially isolated, and you’ve experienced trauma. You are strong, but every mama needs help. Project MAMA offers migrant mamas in Bristol support for positive pregnancy, birth and parenting. We need your help to do this.

Migrant women in the UK have poorer birth-related health outcomes for themselves and their babies, as well as higher rates of postnatal depressive illness. They often experience difficulty accessing the services they need, communicating their needs, and knowing their rights. Many are socially isolated and are subject to asylum and immigration processes under the hostile environment policy which causes stress and practical problems while they are pregnant and in early parenthood.

We provide support services for mamas from pregnancy to early parenthood. We provide holistic care, using interpreters for a comprehensive service. Volunteers are matched with clients and visit them in pregnancy and after birth to give space for unpacking emotions and practical concerns about birth and parenting in the UK. Referrals and signposting to other agencies are made as required. If the mama needs a birth partner the volunteers take on this role. We run a live postnatal support group.
