31% of children in Wandsworth and 43% of children in Lambeth are living in poverty. 14.16% of Wandsworth adults are struggling to access food, and 5.8% are going hungry. In Lambeth these figures are 15% and 3.72% respectively. The problem is twofold. Firstly, many families cannot afford food costs. The cost of living crisis is exacerbating this. Secondly, many communities have no access to nutritious food - with no shops selling affordable good food, and a high density of unhealthy food outlets.
The London Food Bus brings nutritious, affordable food into the heart of deprived communities - tackling issues of both affordability and access. The double decker bus includes a social supermarket on the ground floor. Here, families can purchase healthy food for a fraction of the usual price. Upstairs, there is a café - a space where children can do homework or play and parents can socialise. Advice services are on hand to support families with wider issues such as debt, fuel and housing.
