Sussex Dolphin Project has teamed up with Shoreham Port to turn 3 acres of green space into a biodiversity corridor that allows local wildlife to thrive, and encourages public engagement, teaching the importance of Nature in the heart of a heavily industrialised seaside town, Southwick.

Situation
Southwick, in West Sussex, represents a natural deficit within the local area. There are no other natural spaces for the community to enjoy and wildlife to thrive for more than 1.5km. Many studies have shown the importance of Nature and volunteering in the community to one's health ("Nature and mental health", Mind, 2022). The Shoreham Port Biodiversity Corridor aims to bring this to the community through stewardship and a sense of place.
Solution
The Sussex Dolphin Project has received 3 acres of green space from Shoreham Port as an in kind offer to contribute towards the Port’s eco status. We will undergo activities that will aim to improve habitat diversity, such as grassland and shrub management, and carry out wildlife surveys so that we can develop management plans to suit the needs of particular unique or rare species we find during our surveys. In addition, we will run volunteer days and guided tours to improve public access.
