Our aim is to reduce the unequal health outcomes that survivors of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) face across the country and increase public awareness on FGM/C by ensuring that every woman in the UK is asked at least one question about FGM/C during primary and urgent health care visits.

Situation
FGM/C is illegal in the UK. Nevertheless, there is a chronic failure to detect cases, meaning women don’t receive the necessary support and protection. In fact, cases are often only detected once a woman receives a physical examination, usually for another medical procedure. Such instances often compound the trauma experienced by survivors. The Vavengers have identified an opportunity to ensure better, more sensitive, detection, one question campaign.
Solution
We will campaign and collaborate for the 'One Question Campaign' for the national GP questionnaire to ask women if they have experienced FGM/C. In these circumstances, women can fill out the form confidentially, without a confronting conversation or traumatic examination. This request to GPs comes from the survivors of FGM/C, who have experienced confusing and convoluted processes in receiving a diagnosis- a diagnosis which often helps open up access to vital support.
