Music education in schools has diminished, with budgets prioritised for EBACC and ‘catch up’, and provision in affluent areas is consistently higher in quality and variety. Children from the poorest backgrounds are three times less likely than pupils from wealthier families to learn a musical instrument or sing in a choir (University of Bath 19). 60% of young people from low economic backgrounds agree they've "lost confidence in themselves" as a result of the covid pandemic. Censuswide, 2022.

We enable young people facing barriers to accessing music to enjoy its multiple benefits in a safe space. Over 10 weeks, beneficiaries develop creatively, increase confidence, evolve important life skills and see improvements in mental wellbeing. Workshop leaders selected to lead them have lived experience of the challenges these young people face, and provided expert guidance alongside peer support. Each programme ends with an opportunity to perform and/or record their creative work.
