People with reduced mobility and/or poor vision have difficulty negotiating the steps on the 'Birdswood'. Major alterations and not possible, anti-slip stair treads with a visual contrast are needed. Others with difficulty hearing have remarked on not enjoying the on-board commentry. The PA system needs to be upgraded with a hearing loop facility to enable those with loss of hearing to enjoy the commentary and any safety announcements therefore making the boat trip more enjoyable.

Fitting these anti-slip treads will make it safer and easier for people, with reduced mobility and impaired vision, to negotiate the entrance. A new hearing loop will make it easier for everyone to hear the safety announcement and enjoy the commentary about the heritage of the boat and the canal.
