Women in prison are disadvantaged due to mental ill health, substance misuse, poverty, trauma & abuse & Covid has worsened mental ill health with self-harm at record levels. 2 out of 5 women enter prison for 6 months or less, enough to lose home, job & children. A third of women in prison have been in care as a child, most have experienced domestic abuse & many leave prison homeless. 95% of children separated from their mother by prison leave home to live with relatives or into the care system.

Support in prisons & women’s centres enables women to address root causes that brought them into the criminal justice system – mental ill health, substance use, homelessness, domestic abuse, debt, homelessness, poverty and trauma. We connect women to safe women's spaces before release and ‘through the gate’ to help them rebuild their lives. Our campaigns shine light on the harm of prison & we model an alternative trauma-informed community-based approach centring social justice over punishment.
