Underachievement in people with Down syndrome compounded by lack of specialist knowledge of researched teaching methods that work & lack of provison. Expectations of families and professionals tend to be low. Infants learn basics later than typically developing peers. Young children are often deemed slow and not encouraged to learn. School children progressively fall behind peers in class, challenging behaviour is not strategically dealt with, they are not integrated, they need help to acvhieve.

DEx provides regular specialist support using researched methods so 120 children aged 0 - 18 receive: communication and basic skills therapies; life and employability skills; educational play and socialising opportunties. We work with schools and families to ensure shared knowledge of the children and strategies for learning and coping. DEx also provides consultation and support for families - some are desperate; trains volunteer medical and care students to work with DS; contributes to research
