Black and ethnically diverse musicians are woefully under-represented in professional UK orchestras, and diverse people are in a minority in audiences at concerts of classical music. Beginner musicians from diverse backgrounds and of all ages have few role models to inspire them to take up a musical instrument, or to attract them to exploring the wonders of classical music in the concert audience.

The Chineke! Beginners’ Orchestra will provide rewarding performing experiences for a hitherto overlooked group – those who are not advanced on their chosen instrument but who will benefit from opportunities to play music with their peers and be inspired to develop their interest in music. Some younger members of the Beginners’ Orchestra may progress to the Chineke! Junior Orchestra. Many will become tomorrow’s audience at classical music concerts.
