Each year, hundreds of dolphins are killed as the result of giant factory ships trawling waters around the UK. Victims of bycatch, the bodies of these beautiful, intelligent animals regularly wash up on British shores. We’re calling for greater transparency and stronger legislation to protect them.

Each year, fishing supertrawlers operate off the Sussex coast, just outside of UK territory, in international waters. In 2020, 17 dolphin bodies washed up on the Sussex shore, just 10% of the total estimated to have been killed by bycatch in Sussex alone. These ships operate out of sight, but their presence and unsustainable practices affect not only dolphins, but every fish and living creature caught “by mistake” as bycatch.

We're campaigning to protect dolphins but to do this we also have to protect the fish they rely on, and their ocean habitats. We’re drawing attention to what’s happening off UK shores. We believe that eliminating cetacean bycatch is the only way to truly end the unnecessary suffering of dolphins, whales and porpoises around the world. Therefore, we’re demanding greater transparency and stronger legislation to hold supertrawlers to account, as an essential step towards ending bycatch for good.
