Situation
Tropical forest loss is accelerating due to expansion of agribusiness, extractive industries and associated infrastructure projects. Combined with weak governance, this is a leading cause of climate change and biodiversity loss. Unfortunately schemes designed to protect forests such as strictly protected areas and carbon offsetting schemes often penalise Indigenous Peoples and local communities least responsible for these crises and serve to delay urgent climate action needed at home.
Solution
We NEED a new approach to forest protection. There is growing scientific consensus around our founding principle that entrusting forests to the people who live there is essential to their protection. Our unique human rights centred approach achieves this locally, supporting communities to tackle illegal deforestation, secure land rights & sustainably manage their environment; & globally, we combine this approach with research to campaign for policy change and laws to protect forests and people.
