We work with vulnerable young people in North London who are not able to find work. Most face a number of barriers to finding employment: low educational attainment, a criminal record, homelessness or a mental health issue. In some there is a sense of hopelessness which leads all too many into gangs, addictions and withdrawal from normal society. Their challenges are being compounded by the impact of coronavirus.
We run the Spear Programme for up to 100 young people a year. This Programme is in two parts: Spear Foundation which lasts for six weeks and equips the young people with the skills and attitudes to find work. Spear Career then provides a year's support to help them find sustainable employment. They learn how to write CVs, develop communication and interviewing skills and build positive mind sets and resilience which will be crucial post lockdown. They also find confidence and hope.
