Antisemitic and anti-Muslim incidents spiked by 500% and 430% respectively over 11 days in May 2021, driven by the violent escalation in Israel-Palestine. Young people and teachers often bear the brunt of this. We educate to break this hateful cycle through empathy, empowerment and exploration.

Antisemitic and Islamophobic attitudes along with polarisation and conspiracy theories around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are creating tensions and hatred between British communities. Young people are restricted and restrained within isolated echo chambers that teach them to see diversity and complexity as a threat, rather than as something positive. These echo-chambers are like fortresses with the drawbridges shut. There is little formal learning in school, deepening these problems.

Our response is a four-part programme for young people (14-19) on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: 1. Exploration: Understanding diverse historical narratives from Israeli & Palestinian perspectives 2. Empathy: Hearing personal stories and having humanising dialogue with Israeli & Palestinian speakers 3. Empowerment: A solutions-focused workshop using conflict resolution and critical-thinking skills 4. Exploration in-depth: Undertaking a personal research project using SNS resources
