In the past the 158,000 acre Reserve has been subjected to illegal logging, agricultural encroachment, mining, and annual forest fires. This habitat loss is a serious threat to the population of orangutans and other vulnerable flora and fauna species within the forest. By continuing to protect and monitor this ecologically significant habitat, we can ensure it has a sustainable future.
Orangutan Foundation operate 8 guard posts which are manned by local people around the Reserve. These posts are strategically positioned to patrol for cases of illegal activity and are the first line of defence against damaging forest fires. Our 5 orangutan release camps within the Reserve also play a major role in caring for orphaned orangutans, as well as monitoring reintroduced and wild great apes.
