Using culture & creativity, the project will create a safe space to talk about good mental health with young people aged 14–19yrs from minority ethnic backgrounds. The project will provide training to staff and artists to work in a more “psychologically informed” way, when working with young people.

Situation
BLM campaign heightened concerns about representation in society & equality. Young people from minority ethnic backgrounds are more likely to be living in poverty & due to lockdowns they have had long periods at home, unable to access appropriate technology & support networks & are therefore at an increased risk of suffering from mental health & emotional problems. Schools/colleges are struggling to cope with the demand for psychological services and are keen to explore more preventative methods
Solution
By creating a safe space to build a trusting relationship to support young people & creating an environment where they will feel happy to be together, talk & participate, enabling them to understand their own mental health & how to take care of it. We will encourage them to advocate with each other to reduce the stigma on seeking support for mental health. We aim to increase the capacity of GCF to deliver “psychologically informed” work by offering Mental Health training to all staff & artists.
