NYB widens participation in ballet, nurtures young talent, and enables those currently under-represented in the industry to enter. We do this by delivering performance opportunities and engagement activities for children and young people, and by offering participation in our inclusive programmes.

Situation
1) The ballet industry needs an assorted pool of talent to flourish. 2) Historically ballet has not been inclusive; access frequently has been determined by cultural background, where you live and what you can afford to pay. 3) We receive many more bursary applications every year -from families that can’t take part without financial assistance -than we have funding to support. 4) Our work is vital to increasing diversity in the sector, ensuring that new creative voices are heard.
Solution
Diversity and inclusion are an integral and essential part of the work we do. We aim to improve access by offering 25 bursaries, nearly a quarter of the total intake, for our Residential Performance Company. We currently also offer the Pat Prime award for two students of black African or African-Caribbean descent. We will continue to subsidise the cost of all student places, and we will offer a range of inclusive and accessible engagement activities online.
