Train teachers from 10 vocational training centres across Zambia in sewing machine maintenance, to maximise the impact of the refurbished items we supply. We will run two one-month training courses in Lusaka, giving a recognised skill that they can teach to our beneficiaries.

    Situation

Workaid sends strong manual Singer machines to vocational training centres in Zambia, but it is a tough environment for even the most durable sewing machines - they are heavily used and susceptible to dust as well as well-meaning maintenance efforts which often include over-oiling. On our monitoring visits we sometimes find broken machines that could be easily repaired. This would help the training centres, and the beneficiaries who graduate and go on to set up tailoring businesses.

    Solution

Our partner Vwila is establishing an accredited course in sewing machine maintenance with TEVETA (govt training body). After a successful pilot course, Workaid will arrange two one-month programmes for tailoring tutors from 10 vocational training centres that we supply with sewing machines. The tutors will then pass on these skills to the disadvantaged young people at their training centres (around 100 each year), so enabling them to establish more sustainable businesses when they graduate.
