The masonry on three sides of the Cathedral's central spire has eroded such that the stonework is now dangerous in places; this was exacerbated by storm damage in 2019. Since then we have therefore also had to close a key visitor area in the central tower and cancel our popular Tower Tours. Six flying buttresses on the south exterior also need restoration and one in particular is found to be putting the south side of the Cathedral at risk of collapse.

The project consists of (1) masonry repairs to all elevations of the spire, where defective stones will be removed, and new stone pieces installed, and (2) significant intervention and reconstruction of three flying buttresses to the south side of the Cathedral, with minor masonry repairs to the other three buttresses.
