We know that education can help to change the lives of refugees and asylum seekers for the better, and give them hope for the future. We aim to provide full funding up to £1000 to pay for the course fees and qualifications they desperately need so they can use their skills in the UK.

The Ruth Hayman Trust receives many applications for funding from those seeking sanctuary but up to now we have not had enough money to provide funding for all those who meet our criteria. Fees for academic and vocational courses have risen considerably in the past few years, so we have increased our maximum grant from £500 to £1000. We therefore need to raise extra funds for those seeking sanctuary who suffer severe financial hardship and are unable to pay themselves.

We would award additional grants totalling £12,000 to a minimum of 15 refugees or asylum seekers. This figure is based on an analysis of previous applications for English language and professional training and qualifications. Our grants process is rigorous - all awards given depend on the applicant making an excellent case and providing good references. Nevertheless, we are now finding ourselves making difficult choices between applicants, and the extra funds would help ease this problem.
