Children have been left behind by lockdown. Schools were closed for months. Children have fallen behind with their reading, and children in poverty have been hit the hardest. You can change that, by helping children read again, through volunteer reading sessions with Bookmark.

Before Covid, an average of eight children in a class left primary school unable to read well. Since March 2020 schools have shut, twice, and now things are much worse. Because reading isn't just about books. It’s about reading a road sign, a safety manual, a birthday card. It’s understanding a job application or the literature about the Covid vaccine. Poor literacy leads to limited job prospects, poor health, low self-esteem, and even reduced life expectancy.

You can help children develop the reading skills and confidence they need for a fair chance in life, through Bookmark's flexible, volunteer-led programme. The Bookmark app matches schools with fully safeguarded, vetted and trained reading volunteers. During each programme, a volunteer has one-to-one sessions twice a week, for six weeks with a child who needs extra help with their reading. We can deliver 13,100 reading sessions for £100,000.
