Situation
Droughts are becoming more intense in the Sahel region of Africa. Saint Louis is located in this arid region that is characterised by water shortages, food insecurity and malnutrition. Climatic issues are therefore preventing farmers from moving beyond subsistence farming, and they are locked in a cycle of low production and low income.
Solution
The project will trial innovative soil and water management techniques that reduce the need for water whilst improving yield and crop quality. The techniques are climate smart because they reduce pressure on scarce water resources and help to halt land degradation. We will encourage farmers to adopt these improved, climate smart farming practices through farmer field schools, field mentoring and a mass communication campaign disseminated via radio and mobile phone, targeting primarily women.
