The project will enable young people to make a positive difference to the environment and improve access to nature by devising and leading local projects to create greener neighbourhoods. A youth worker will co-ordinate activities and help communities develop lasting connections with nature.

Biodiversity loss and climate change are urgent environmental threats so we need more people taking action for nature. Young people have most to lose as they’ll live with the results of decisions taken in the next decade, but they rarely partake in decision-making. We want to give them a voice. Lockdown has made people appreciate the value of nature for wellbeing but access to it is not equal especially in urban and deprived areas. We want to level things up and re-green North East communities.

We want to enable enthusiastic young people under 18 to create and run environmental projects benefitting their own communities, schools and youth clubs and build lasting networks to continue the work. A trained youth worker will engage individuals/groups and guide them through the process to completion. These groups will be selected from urban or deprived areas for maximum impact on health and wellbeing. We expect to run 6 larger projects and engage with 30 groups and recruit new volunteers.
