All children have the right to play and to enjoy their childhood. Research shows that play is crucial for children’s development, and their longterm success. It builds confidence, creativity, communication and critical thinking skills. But for those living in poverty in Bangladesh, play feels like a luxury. Many children spend time away from school, helping in the home rather than playing, and there are few play facilities. We believe play is not a ‘nice to have’, it is a child’s basic right.
We are designing and building a new playground for a remote school in northwest Bangladesh, serving underprivileged children. It will ‘extend the classroom’ and create life-long development opportunities for students and future generations. The design is multi-sensory. It encourages solo and group play, includes active spaces for physical exertion and passive spaces for reflection, incorporates music and colour, and connects with nature.
