Imagine being surrounded by demons, talking snakes and other characters from Paradise Lost. Or seeing the ghost of Milton in the place he wrote his epic masterpiece. Using augmented reality, we will work with young people to develop a playful visitor experience to engage new audiences with Milton.

Today, Milton is much revered but little read. As his only surviving residence we are looking for new ways to engage audiences with his extraordinary legacy. We have no dedicated offer for young people and families, however, and want to address this as a priority. Highlighting the urgent need for this work, the majority of respondents to the 2018 Museums and Technology Surveys felt they could find more engaging experiences on their smartphone, tablet or games console than they do in museums.
AR offers a solution to our problem, providing fun and immersive ways for young people to explore Milton’s life, work and times. We want to explore its potential to bring our collection of 17th century books to life - firing the imagination and sparking creativity. Young people will be at the heart of the creative process, working alongside professional designers, technicians and writers to create imaginative and interactive journeys around Milton’s Cottage for their peers.
