Based in Boscombe, independent homeless charity Michaels Limited opened the doors to Michael House in 2000 to ensure that we could focus our attention on providing longer-term opportunities for people to rebuild their lives in a safe environment. The recent pandemic has impacted on every aspect of our services, except our creativity and passion to support those in need.

Situation
As an independent Homelessness Charity, we work to a strict budget. To ensure the safety of our residents we had to reduce our capacity at the start of Lockdown and have lost income of £1,000 a week. For many people, this has been a very challenging time. For our residents, this was a very abrupt halt to their plans for the future, where they had to come to terms with putting their lives on hold with limited external support available and whilst they were at the beginning of their next journey.
Solution
By creating a nurturing environment, where our residents feel “safe, warm and inspired” and encouraged to overcome personal challenges and trauma, through creative interventions, 1-2-1 support, 2-2-1 groups, digital and paper-based activities, we aim to restore self-esteem and assist with life skills. Residents are also offered the opportunity to have their achievements formally recognised and achieve a certificate each time a short unit of personal or career development is completed.
