ETO's award-winning operas for children improve the lives of thousands of children each year. In 2021, ETO will create a new, interactive opera for children in Key Stage One (age 5-7) that explores friendship, sharing and diversity, to challenge the impact of severe isolation during lockdown.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the mental health, wellbeing and happiness of young children. Severe isolation, disruptions to learning, anxiety and craving interaction with friends are just some of the challenges affecting children and 67% of parents and carers are concerned about the long-term impact of the virus. Music's transformative benefits to children's confidence, wellbeing, social skills, self-expression and academic achievement will play a crucial role in tackling this.

ETO will create a live, participatory opera for children in Key Stage One (aged 5-7) that directly responds to these challenges. Across a national tour, 'Back into the World' will improve the lives of over 1,000 children in at least ten schools, taking them on three adventures that explore friendships and sharing, celebrate equality and diversity, and discover the outside world. Participatory songs and interactive story will actively engage children in this immersive, cross-art experience.
