Situation
Despite child labour being against the law in Bangladesh it remains rife. Around 3.2m children under 14 are sent to work where they face abuse, work long hours and are at risk of harm in return for paltry pay. For families experiencing extreme poverty, survival not education is a priority. While school is compulsory, working children are denied their right to an education and their life chances, potential for progress and future prospects are extremely limited.
Solution
By building the skills and confidence of child labourers through literacy, numeracy and life skills programmes, we will support progression from child labour to state education and training. Alongside direct education, we support families into sustainable income generation to eliminate the need to send their children to work, assist with enrolling siblings into school, and grassroots awareness raising of children's rights and their improved future prospects as a result of education.
