We welcome refugees and asylum seekers into our Leicester communities, supporting them to rebuild their lives, develop their skills, integrate & feel part of the community. We encourage them to volunteer both with us & more widely. We help the wider community better understand & welcome refugees.

Situation
There are 1000+ asylum seekers in Leicester, living in relative poverty (many are destitute) & suffering from stress, poor health, extreme isolation & loneliness. Refugees typically have poorer general & emotional health than the general population - almost 1/5 report having no friends or family in the UK & many see loneliness &isolation as their biggest challenge. BAME backgrounds & poor health make them more vulnerable to COVID-19. They are in desperate need of emotional & practical support.
Solution
Our Emergency Fund is essential for those in desperate circumstances & provision of basic items relieves poverty. Our SupportHub gives people a place to belong, learn & make friends. Many volunteer with us, helping others whilst building skills, confidence & self-esteem. Our activities make a very real difference – Ahmed says: It’s like a balloon, it fills up with tension and could explode, I feel it will explode if I do not release it, without the activities at the sanctuary I may as well die.
