Gender equality is globally the most common form of inequality and remains a major obstacle to the eradication of poverty. Tanzanian society is largely patriarchal and in many communities, women are under the control of men and often accorded to a lower social status. Gender roles have, therefore, been stereotyped as being masculine and feminine which is reflected in the lack of equal opportunities for females to lead and participate in sport.

Research on sport, gender, and development indicates that sport can benefit girls and women by: • Enhancing health and well-being; • Fostering self-esteem and empowerment; • Facilitating social inclusion and integration; • Challenging gender norms; and • Providing opportunities for leadership and achievement. Through this project we will train and support female sports leaders to deliver more opportunities for girls from disadvantaged communities to participate in and lead sport.
