Situation
The YRAS we work with are among the most vulnerable people in London when we first meet them. Many have not arrived in the UK through safe routes and are here alone without families. Many are destitute, speak little English, have insecure immigration status, don’t have access to good legal advice and have mental health issues. Most have fled war, human rights abuses, seen members of their families killed, some have been trafficked and/or experienced violence and threats because of their identity
Solution
Young Roots often meets young people when they have only been in the UK for a few weeks or when other support has failed. Our Casework Service, set up in 2016, offers one-to-one support and advocacy to young refugees and asylum seekers aged 11-25 years, enabling them to access legal advice, welfare support, mental and physical healthcare and education, as well as to build trusted relationships. YRAS are supported to make their own decisions and advocate for themselves wherever possible.
