Makomborero aims to see 1000s of girls stay in school by identifying vulnerable 13/14 year olds & providing a Mentorship Programme that gives them hope & a vision for their future, beyond the social pressures they face. We hope to see more girls make it through to Form 4 & not drop out at Form 2.

Due to the economic situation in Zimbabwe, girls face incredible pressure to drop out of school. Girls' education is often not a priority, and they feel they have no choice other than to leave school before they are 15 years old and get married. This has resulted in some girls in poor communities seeing no purpose in education. We know of cases of child prostitution, girl brides consenting to marriage, teenage pregnancies, brothers' education taking priority over a sister etc.
We teach the girls that there is hope of a brighter future. This is achieved through Mentorship classes run by past Makomborero female students, who are from the same communities but have defied their own circumstances to excel academically. We are training young Community mentors for continuity. The girls are taught life skills and crocheting to give them a way to help support their families & contribute to their own educational costs. They also network with inspirational, local female leaders.
