Situation
Just 21% of children in the UK have an adequate level of connection to nature, which negatively impacts on their learning, behaviour, health and wellbeing and means they are less likely to fight to protect it as adults. Global wildlife population sizes have decreased by 60% since 1970. The UK is leading this race to the bottom with 41% of its species showing declines, and so just when we need them most we risk losing the next generation of volunteers, supporters and professionals.
Solution
Many organisations seek to connect children below the age of 12 with nature, but far less work exists to engage young people during their teenage years. We know young people have a strong desire to give back and are often prevented from doing so simply through lack of opportunities and confidence. So, we inspire and empower 12-18 year olds from diverse backgrounds to take action for nature through workshops, residential camps and a mentoring programme, in partnership with UK conservation NGOs.
