Situation
The stunning Lake District fells are a paradise for walkers, attracting more than 19 million visitors annually. But sadly the pounding of millions of pairs of well-booted feet is devastating this incredibly fragile mountain environment. Erosion from hikers’ boots is only getting worse too – the Lake District mountains are under unprecedented pressure due to massive growth in tourism (5 million more visitors in 2016 compared to 2006).
Solution
Through the project, our team of 130 dedicated volunteers and rangers will spend many days out in the mountains throughout each year and in all weather conditions to carry out hands-on, practical activities, such as pitching paths, clearing drains and re-landscaping erosion. This work is always carried out in environmentally sensitive ways, using locally sourced stone and traditional techniques.
